The challenge of a landscape painting is to recreate the enjoyment that the world of nature gives to us.
I have a passion for landscape painting; it is a great challenge.
My concept is to try, using a forest or woodland landscape, to tempt the viewer into my painting.
With rivers or streams, paths or trails, I can lead your eye through the painting and into the landscape. What is round this bend? What will be over that hill?
I want to attract you into the peaceful and relaxing landscape that is a celebration of nature.
In my experience, one of the foundations of a landscape painting is a good composition, incorporating a balanced arrangement of design, colour, light and eye movement.
I am also mindful to ensure that I keep to a high level of draftsmanship – maintaining accuracy and precision in my work whilst allowing areas that are soothing and quiet.
Colour, of course, is also important. Soft, pastel shades are contrasted with dark or back-lit tree trunks, giving perspective and interest.
Similarly reflections on lakes or sunlight on rivers give depth and appeal.
To present it simply but hold our attention is a complex task.
Many of my landscape paintings have an air of mystery…I love to use sunlight through mist to create this atmosphere. I have studied the use of light in my paintings for many years and feel confident in its use, although I am always trying to adopt new techniques within my style of work. My more open landscape paintings are serene nature views, of fields and woodlands, rivers and lakes, but with foreground interest and demanding skies.
Although I distinguish between my wildlife painting and my landscape painting on my website, wildlife will naturally creep into some of the landscape paintings. Who can walk through a wood without hoping to catch a glance of a deer, or hear the birds?
